Watercolor Artist Statement

My painting is of a vertical landscape. It shows a forest with tall trees and a blue river going through them. There are green leaves covering the trees and they come in all different shades. The grass lays on the ground in a pattern and there are bushes and trees in the background. I created this painting by doing a wash on my paper of light blue and light green. I started painting the river first by making brush strokes in the same direction each time. I used a lot of different colors and added more or less water to the blues and greens to make them darker or lighter. For the grass, I blended all of my shades to make it look like patchwork on the ground. For the leaves on the trees, I kept the different colors away from each other to give the leaves a more grouped look. I used a big brush for the background and grass, and I used a smaller brush for the leaves. When I was almost done, I used a very small brush to do the tiny details of the leaves in hopes to make them look closer to the viewer.

If I did this painting again, I would pay more attention to the close-up details. I would want the farther trees to look farther away and vis versa with the closer ones. I wanted this painting to be peaceful and pretty simple. I wanted to show the beauty and range of colors in the forest and the contrast between the grass, leaves, and water. The different shades of green and the simple river support my intended meaning. The ways the colors work together came out how I wanted it to. For my next watercolor, I want to work on my details and make certain things pop out more than others.
